Mr. Lincoln’s 200th Birthday
Thougn Abraham Lincoln didn’t make it to most ballots in the South in 1860, even the counties in which he appeared on ballots did not show strong or even moderate support for Lincoln as president. Nonetheless, absolute (as opposed to conditional) Southern Unionists were, even if only reluctantly, able to see, even beyond his call for troops, that as people of the Union, Lincoln was their president.
