I have read that the 1st Alabama cav USV was not a very effective or disciplined military unit. The 1st Ark USV under Col. Larue Harrison is better regarded by authors writing of COIN warfare during the ACW. Overall from what I gather the best Unionist regiments were has far has heavy conventional warfare was the 1st Va cav under Col. Bufford and perhaps some regiments from WV excluding the 4th which was composed mostly of Ohioans. Of course I could very well be wrong.

My great, great, like 4 times great Uncle was KIA in the 1st Alabama Cavalry, USA Volunteers. He was a southern Unionist from Georgia. He was killed in that very state. A true great USA hero.

The 1st Al Cav,USA was Sherman’s personal guard for the March to the Sea.
